1909
Construction of the first sports ground with wooden stands thanks to the financial support of the city of Bremen
1926
Reconstruction of the first large stand with dressing rooms and a restaurant. Next to football matches, the stadium is used for political mass gatherings
1930
Werder Bremen stages most of its matches in the stadium called “Weser-Stadion”, but other teams from Bremen play there, too.
1935
In December 1934 the city of Bremen took over the sports facilities and renamed it. Sports became less important as the NSDAP and its organizations used the facilities quite often for political events.
1945
After the end of the Second World War, American team sports like baseball and American football were practiced in the stadium that was now called “IKE Stadium”.
1947
Re-opening of the Weser-Stadion
1955
In the 1950s, the stadium is the home ground for Werder Bremen and Bremer SV. In addition to that, other sports events such as bicycle races, horse shows and athletics events take place in the Weser-Stadion.
1963
Introduction of the German “Bundesliga”. The North stand is roofed and new floodlights are installed

1965
Win of the first German football league championship and completion of new stand with an upper tier.
1973
South stand is modernised and gets a new roof.
1978
Completion of the north stand that now offers 9,500 seats. Installation of the “famous” floodlights.
1988
Newly constructed west stand with dressing rooms, Werder Bremen office and a therapy centre.
1992
Completion of the new south stand with athletics gym, weights room, offices and two restaurants. The Weser-Stadion becomes the first stadium in Germany with VIP boxes (37 boxes for 364 visitors) and the east stand gets an electric score board.

1995
Conversion of the standing room into seats in the west stand. German Athletics Championships take place in the Weser-Stadion.
1997
Conversion of the standing room into seats in the north stand. Newly constructed area with a capacity for 120 handicapped people. Installation of two colour video screens in the west and east stand with 50 m² each. Completion of the new east stand with five floors offering plenty of space for dressing rooms, a fan shop, rooms for fan projects, a boarding school and a new Werder Bremen office. The Weser-Stadion becomes the first German stadium having a large VIP box with a capacity for 700 people with an integrated restaurant.
1998
Installation of an under-soil heating and replacement of the turf.

2002
Capacity increases by 8,000 to a total of about 43,500 by lowering the interior of the stadium by 2.10 metres. New mobile stands are integrated in the north and south stand.
2004
Completion of the north stand with an underground car park, 4 office towers, a significantly improved infrastructure for the visitors, opening of the Werder Bremen Museum (“WUSEUM”), 384 new platinum seats and 33 boxes with 356 outdoor seats

since 2008
Reconstruction of the stadium (conversion into a true football arena)
• Reconstruction of the stadium’s roof with thin layered photovoltaic modules and construction of a new circumferential façade with multi-crystalline photovoltaic modules (north stand excluded)
• Straightening of the east and west curves
• Capacity increase in the categories platinum seats and gold seats
• Construction of additional VIP boxes in the west stand
• New kiosks and toilets
• Newly constructed media centre and security zone
• Increase in the Weser-Stadion’s quality and comfort
